As Mac gets older, we are more on the go with much less fuss and prep. It's wonderful! I remember leaving the house those first few times with a newborn and taking every single thing we thought we might possibly ever need, which took up the entire back seat and at least 45 minutes to pack the car! Do you remember those days? I thought we would never leave the house again. Now, Mac is really easy to pack for. Basically, I've found that as long as we have diapers and wipes, we can manage just about everything else. But it seems like we're always in a hurry. I can't even begin to tell you the number of times I've left the house recently and accidentally left the diaper bag at home. Or I remember to grab the diaper bag, only to have not stocked it in weeks so I don't have the item(s) I want or need. #momfail
A few months ago I saw the idea on Pinterest (seriously, what did we do before Pinterest?) to create a mobile diaper changing kit/station for your car, so you always have what you need, without having to drag a giant diaper bag around. With our trip to the ranch last weekend I finally decided it was time to pull the trigger and make our kit, so we wouldn't have to take a huge diaper bag in addition to all our other luggage. I'm actually really happy with how it turned out and we used it all weekend long, since we were in and out of our car the whole time.
I just grabbed an extra basket from Mac's nursery that we weren't really using and put all the essentials in there. I love that it's really easily accessible and holds a lot of items. I might change out the basket for a bin with a lid in the future, but for now, this works perfectly.
1 // Huggies Clutch 'n' Clean Wipes 2 // band-aids 3 // diapers 4 // antibacterial wipes 5 // stain pen 6 // antibacterial gel 7 // antibacterial spray 8 // Boogie wipes 9 // chapstick 10 // alcohol pads and antibiotic cream 11 // Advil (for mom) 12 // diaper cream 13 // sunscreen 14 // sippy cup 15 // swim diapers 16 // suckers
(Other items you could include, but not pictured: tissues, changing pad, disposable bags, granola bar/snacks, bug spray, change of clothes, lotion, cough drops, sewing kit, crayons, pen, notepad, nail clippers, stickers, sunglasses)
Other than the diapers, the wipes are probably the most important element in the kit. A few times over the weekend I'd just grab a diaper out of the kit and this clutch of wipes and stick them in my purse for an instant diaper bag. Not only are they pretty stylish, but I really like the sturdiness of the Huggies Clutch 'n' Clean wipes because I don't feel like they will leak in my purse or dry out in the hot summer sun. The clutch is also refillable, which is awesome because it's so much cheaper buying wipes in bulk. And I like the Huggies Natural Care wipes because they're really thick and gentle on sensitive skin. I use wipes on everything from cleaning up cat puke, removing makeup, wiping off the counters (or the dashboard of my car) and for getting all the crud off the car seat. You can seriously never have too many diaper wipes.
I'm pretty happy with the way this turned out. Now I can rededicate our diaper bag to Mim's needs and keep this stocked for Mac. It's really great having these items all within arms reach in the car.
Anyone else have a mobile diaper changing kit in the car?
What's in yours?

Such a great idea! I love ideas like this; I'm super unorganized!
ReplyDeleteLove this idea! I've been thinking I need to make one of these for both of our cars but I was afraid that the wipes would dry out too fast being in the car during the summer.
ReplyDeleteYep, this is amazing!
ReplyDeletelove this idea! I'm already planning to make something similar now that Elyse is potty trained. I know accidents will happen so I'm planning to add an extra set of clothes & panties to the collection. I also picked up one of those clutches at ToysRUs last week and they are so cute! I can just toss that in my purse and we're good to go! Just because Elyse is potty trained doesn't mean my need for wipes is gone!
ReplyDeleteYou just reminded me that I need to update our car kit! Heaven only knows what's still in there ;)
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea! I will have to try this.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea!! Thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteLove it! Preparedness for all things is key :)
ReplyDeleteWe do this too! Although I'm not near as organized as you... Ours is basically: diapers, wipes, change of clothes, water bottle, granola bar, small first aid kit, hand sanitizer, blanket (doubles as a towel or changing pad), and disposable plastic bags. That's basically what we take on the airplane with us too! I've used those plastic bags for SO much. Wet clothes, poopy clothes, sandy shoes, poopy diapers, vomit, vomit clothes, collected trash, and more vomit clothes. I try to be minimalist, but those bags are up there with diapers and wipes for me!
ReplyDeleteOh, and now we also have a portable potty back there too. That's super-cool. :P
Genius!!!! And you're right, there's no such thing as too many wipes...for some reason we're going through them at record pace this summer!!!
ReplyDeleteI am getting mine set up TODAY! Thank you so much :)))))
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Right now I keep the diaper bag in the car and just use a big purse for essentials when we're out and about. I think I might have to change that up though, because I like the idea of having a dedicated basket for these kinds of things!
ReplyDeleteI love this! I really like that you hooked the diaper disposal bag thing and the wipes to the handle of the basket...so smart! But even as you look at all this stuff, isn't it crazy how much stuff our kids need?
ReplyDeleteI SO need this! Sometimes I will chance it and take Mason somewhere and then smell something and be like "dear god, please tell me he didn't poop two seconds into our grocery trip..." LOL. I need to make one of these!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea!!! What type of sunscreen do you use?
ReplyDeleteThanks! for sharing the essentials.
ReplyDeleteChanging baby biapers with mobile diaper changing kit is amazing idea. :)
